Visceral Attack at The Moorings Bar
I went to Aberdeen last weekend to meet up with a friend and hit the pubs for a good night out but while at The Moorings Bar (an awesome rock bar in town) I got side tracked as a band walked on stage to play a set, it was the headliner of the evening and their name was Visceral Attack. As soon as they started playing I was blown away by their energy, the singer was going nuts and was actually in the crowd for the whole show which was pretty cool while the rest of the band expelled a massive wall of sound that instantly made me put down my drink, stop chatting and turn to the stage. The music was heavy and combined with the pure raw energy I was compelled to grab my camera (which I didn't intend to use, I just had it in my bag) and get up front and document what was going on. I tried to capture the visceral movement that was being unleashed by the whole band and especially vocalist Chris Mc Cabe. By the end of the few songs I photographed I felt drained trying to keep up with Chris and the band (crazy amount of energy, they certainly put in a shift), I am lucky I have spent years shooting in fast paced situations with manual focus lenses as there was no way any autofocus was going to keep up with this singer. All I can say is that it was good fun to photograph them and it's rare that a band make me grab my camera when i'm not intending to. They put on a great show with very cool heavy music and boundless energy.
If your into heavy music and see these guys are touring in your area then I recommend heading out and catching the show, will be well worth it.

Richard Warren 'Johnny Johnny' and other videos
Check out Richard Warren's new song and video for 'Johnny Johnny'. A really cool song and a simple yet very effective video. There is something just really cool about it.
These videos he's releasing in the lead up to the release of his new album 'The Wayfarer' are great and is especially appealing to me as a visual creative who loves music, I love when the new one is posted online each week. Think this is video number 5. Check out the first two in a blog post I did a few weeks back. I will post the other new videos in this post too for you to check out. This album is going to be good and is really up my street in musical style from what I have heard so far. Can't wait to get my hand on a copy.

Richard Warren 'The Wayfarer' and Music Videos
Richard Warren is to release a new solo album 'The Wayfarer' in October and every week until its release he is posting a video for each song on the album on to his site and YouTube. These are the first two and I love their simplicity in visuals but also love the music, very very cool. I am especially fond of the Instrumental 'Revington Street' ( i'm really into instrumentals right now) and what about a cool name for a song, well 'The lonesome Singer in the Apocalypse Band' covers that if you ask me.

I decided to add to my portrait Illustration series with this portrait of one of my favourite musicians 'Josh T. Pearson'.
It is from a photograph I took of him in London last year and I always wanted to do some kind of painting of it but was waiting until I felt I could do it a bit of justice.

Last Of The Country Gentlemen
JOSH T. PEARSON (London 2010)
I recently purchased Josh T. Pearson's debut solo album "Last Of The Country Gentlemen". I didn't know too much about him other than seeing him play in London in 2010 and being really impressed. Anyway I bought the album and gave it a few listens. In that few listens it quickly became one of my all time favourite albums which is a bold statement to make.
The music is country or I would say alternative country which is not a genre I listen to (I have always been a Rock guy). The songs are long but never uninteresting, they are sad confessions about his life and break up with his wife. Each song is a beautiful story that you even wish would last longer than 12 mins.
I then saw him play in Glasgow a few days later and was amazed at the performance, it is by far the best gig I have been to (I have been to a lot).
The album is now on constant play in my flat and when it finishes I find it hard to put anything else on that can match the mood and emotion. It is is an amazing piece of art and I think that he should get much more recognition. "Last Of The Country Gentlemen" is now my favourite album and will be for a long while, maybe until he brings out another record.
I urge everyone to give it a listen and if you have the patience to sit and listen to the record from start to finish and listen to the words you will not be disappointed.

'Monster Shark' Video (instrumental demo and video)

I made this video to go with the 'Monster Shark' demo instrumental I did last week.
I made it quite quickly and it kind of matches the roughness and mood of the song.
All of this project including the music and video editing was made with free software. I liked the challenge of not using any expensive industry standard software, it really makes you work harder and I feel produces something more than you maybe would have with all the right tools.
This was a fun project from start to finish and filled my spare time well. I will be producing much more of these in the future so watch this space as I'm sure they will be getting bigger and better.

A Weird Little Song That I am Calling ‘Monster Shark’

I spent an hour tonight trying to make a weird little song. I was going for a raw, unpolished feel that was kind of melodic and had some sort of ‘normalness’ to it (hence the same acoustic guitar riff being played throughout). Totally weird things can be cool but I like to blend reality with the surreal, I try to do the same things with my photography and illustrations. This was all one take tracks as I wanted it to be as ramshackled as possible without too much thought or over production (I feel that too much thought into things like this can ruin the outcome, fun and the challenge).
So Give it a listen. I will probably work on it more as there things I would like to change when I have time. In advance I will let you know that it is probably not good but was awesome fun creating it and getting this weird feeling that was with me all day off my chest.
This was made with old broken down instruments, a crappy microphone and free music software. It’s done all in one takes, is completely out of time, virtually nothing is in rhythm and nothing is played well, just the way I like it.
Process: This is for my friend who asked the process of recording this track, so here is how i did it (well kind of).
Instruments: Acoustic guitar, Violin (first time I have played or touched one really) and vocals.
Thinking about the process though I’m really not sure how I did it, it all happened so quickly and was pretty intuitive and I wasn’t thinking about anything. It was all recorded through the Zoom H1 recorder (which I was using as a mic and interface) and recorded in Audacity. I would simply record one instrument (started with the violin) then would mess around with it using EQ etc (spending a couple of mins on each track) then moving to the next one (next was the guitar riff, then vocal). I did mess around more with the vocal to get it weird enough. Basically that was it, think I ended up with around 6 tracks in the final song.
Hope this kind of helps out.

Was a great gig in a great little dingy venue.
They have a new album out this month called "run run run" which is available now and it should be a great listen. There last album was damn good. I'm off to purchase a copy now.

The Tenebrous Liar
I Saw Tenebrous Liar at the Windmill in Brixton on Monday. They are an awesome band, this is the third time i have seen them now. The first two times were when they supported Soulsavers and they really caught my attention. The music is dark, energetic, heavy, soft take a look at their myspace here www.myspace.com/tenebrousliar
The singer 'Steve Gullick' is also a well known music photographer. His photography is so good. He has photographed many great people such as Kurt Cobain, Mark Lanegan, Lou Reed, Neil Young and many more. He is a true inspiration when it comes to music photography for me. If your interested in Photography or music then you really need to check out his stuff. His website can be found here www.gullickphoto.com/
So if you get the chance to go see The Tenebrous Liar or an exhibition of Steve's photographs I don't think you will be disappointed. I am now a big fan of both.
All photographs taken on an old Olympus OM-2N film camera, using TRI-X film thats either pushed to 800 or 1600.

Soulsavers Gig
Soulsavers at The Electric Ballroom in Camden on Friday night (11th Dec o9).
Was an amazing gig, the band were spot on and full of energy, Lanegans vocals were perfect. One of the best gigs i have ever seen.
We got to meet Mark lanegan. Mark is my favourite singer of all time and this is pretty much a dream come true meeting him. He was a really cool guy, he was happy to chat for a few minutes and take a few photo's. We didn't want to bother him that much as there were a couple of crazed fans that were clawing at him but we got a few photos and that was really cool. We asked him to take a photo of me and Cat for some reason (did I mention we were a little drunk) which he said yeah, but that he ain't that good with cameras (especially 30 year old film cameras) and the photo was eh......pretty messed up but is a cool memory of the night.
We also met The Guitarist Rich Warren. He is an awesome guitarist and is full of energy, its so good to watch him perform.
We also met the Bassist Martyn lenoble who was also very cool. All great musicians in their own right. Great night and here are some of the shots from the night.
